The Batu Caves are the icon of Kuala Lumpur. They’re several million years old, originating within a mountain range which millions of years ago reached all the way to Krabi itself (Thailand). The group is composed of approximately 30 caves. The two main ones (Temple Cave and Dark Cave) are open to tourists. The Batu Caves were founded at the end of the 19th century by K. Thamboosamy Pillay, an Indian traveller. He came to this area to earn money and bought the land. The god Murugan, son of Shiva, according to mythology was an uncompromising warrior against the forces of evil. A few temples were built in his honour. These caves are dedicated to him. Everything began with a single temple constructed in honour of the god Murugan. The temple was built high inside the cave so that visitors would be tortured a bit before entering the sacred area. After a few versions of wooden stairs which continually collapsed, a stone stairway was built in 1953 which currently has 272 steps. It was later decided to build a few additional temples dedicated to gods related to Shiva and Murugan, including: Hanuman - god of monkeys, Ganesha - patron of elephants, Mariamman - Hindu mother goddess responsible for healing.
